New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: How do you decide when you've done enough work for the day?
80 by zzaip | 36 comments on Hacker News.
I'm a relatively junior software engineer, a little over a year out from university, with a cushy remote job working for big-co. And I never know how much work to do on a given day. Right now, my daily rule of thumb is to try to have my butt in the seat for ~8 hours. I clock out at 6 and stay disciplined so I don't end up overworking as many remoters do. The main disadvantage of this strategy is that it just doesn't align with the reality of the job. Some days I work on something complex and want to work more hours, while others I'll knock out a few small things and want to call it early. Strategies I'd like to use but can't: - Show up and leave with my coworkers. We're a remote team, and have a few serious workaholics on the team (not to mention the issue of timezones). - Leave when I've done my tasks. This might work if we had actual sprints. Our reality is an endless stream bugs and features for us to work on before we launch our product, and we just grab tickets as they come. Hopefully this improves after launch. What do you do? I want to do enough work to feel good about myself, without burning out. I have very little supervision from management, my coworkers seem to respect and like me, and I am generally productive. Help me, HN.

Iran says Israel will 'regret' further attacks on Syria
The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has said Israel will be sorry if it continues to attack Syria's army and its allies. Iran and Russia have both backed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in a seven-year war against rebels. "The Zionist regime has been trying to establish a crisis in Syria and has taken steps to directly support terrorist groups and target the Syrian army and forces who are confronting terrorism," Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said on Thursday, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

Christine Blasey Ford testifies before 17 male senators and almost no women
Christine Blasey Ford delivered gut-wrenching testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday — and not to the most representative audience, either. Kavanaugh's accuser told her story to 17 male Senators and just four female Senators today. Female prosecutor Rachel Mitchell was also on the panel to assist in the questioning. The eleven Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee are all white men. SEE ALSO: Someone left a poignant note for Christine Blasey Ford ahead of the Kavanaugh hearing All four female senators — Senator Klobuchar of Minnesota, Senators Harris and Feinstein of California, and Senator Hirono of Hawaii — are Democrats. Senate Republicans frequently deferred to Mitchell, who they hired to question Ford during the hearing. Netanyahu, in U.N. speech, claims secret Iranian nuclear site
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Netanyahu showed an aerial photograph of the Iranian capital marked with a red arrow and pointed to what he said was a previously secret warehouse holding nuclear-related material. Netanyahu spoke 4-1/2 months after U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from the accord, arguing it did too little to rein in Tehran's nuclear ambitions and triggering the resumption of U.S. economic sanctions on Iran. Netanyahu said the site contained some 15 kilograms (33 pounds) of radioactive material that has since been moved and called on the U.N. atomic agency to inspect the location immediately with Geiger counters.

US wants death penalty for NY truck attack suspect
US federal prosecutors on Friday signaled their intention to seek the death penalty against the Uzbek immigrant accused of killing eight people in a New York truck rampage, should he be convicted at trial. Sayfullo Saipov, 30, allegedly drove a rented pickup truck down a mile-long stretch of bike path in Manhattan as children and their parents prepared to celebrate Halloween on October 31, 2017. It was the deadliest attack in New York since the September 11, 2001 Al-Qaeda hijackings brought down the Twin Towers.

She was once the face of abused maids in Hong Kong -- imprisoned, starved and beaten so badly she lost control of her bodily functions. Erwiana completed a degree in economics this month -- the culmination of a dream that brought her to Hong Kong in 2013 before her life was turned upside down. "Before I went to Hong Kong, I had been dreaming I could make enough money to study," the 27-year-old told AFP from her home in Indonesia's cultural capital Yogyakarta.

Italy's populists challenge EU with plans to boost deficit
After tussling with Economy Minister Giovanni Tria for weeks, the four-month old government on Thursday proposed a 2019 deficit that is, at 2.4 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), three times the previous administration's target. The rub is that Italy has the largest debt among big European Union economies, at 131 percent of GDP, and it is under pressure from the EU to rein in spending amid fears it could sow the seeds of a new debt crisis in the euro zone. In a move certain to raise hackles with the European Commission, which monitors and enforces EU fiscal rules, the government sees the deficit remaining at 2.4 percent for the next three years, rather than progressively declining toward zero as the Commission's recipe prescribes.

China demands U.S. 'dispel obstacles' to military ties and stop slander
Trump on Wednesday accused China of seeking to interfere in the Nov. 6 U.S. congressional elections, saying that Beijing did not want him or his Republican Party to do well because of his pugnacious stance on trade. The two countries are already embroiled in an acrimonious trade war and have continued to butt heads over a list of sensitive issues including the disputed South China Sea and self-ruled Taiwan, armed by Washington but claimed by Beijing. On Saturday, China summoned the U.S. ambassador in Beijing and postponed joint military talks to protest Washington's decision to sanction a Chinese military agency and its director for buying Russian fighter jets and a surface-to-air missile system.

'Radical vegans' strike fear into French butchers
When the stone slabs crashed into her butcher's shop window last week, Elisabeth Cure became the latest victim of "radical vegans" who are trying to force a change in eating habits in traditionally meat-loving France. The attack in a quiet town of Saint-Arnoult-en-Yvelines, 50 kilometres (30 miles) southwest of Paris, took place at 3:00 am, startling Cure as she slept above the store. As in other similar incidents around France over the last year, her tormentors left a tell-tale tag scrawled on the shopfront: "End the Repression".
