Show HN: Restapp.io – SQL Data Modeling Tool in No/Low Code

Hey all! We've been working on RestApp V1 and this is our first time posting it on HN. It's an No/Low Code data modeling tool that enables you to build & maintain data pipelines with a visual programming interface. We don't store your data but we compute them through Apache Spark for query speed & efficiency. Here's some features: `Connectors: Connect to any source and destinations (DB, DWH and SaaS Applications). We currently support MongoDB, Snowflake, BigQuery, MySQL, MSSQL, SFTP (JSON, txt, csv, excel files supported), Hubspot, Stripe, GDrive (JSON, txt, csv, excel files supported). `Pipeline: Visual Programming Interface where you drag-and-drop SQL, NoSQL & Python functions instead of writing them to create a query and debug it easily. `Automation: You can automate your data pipeline (Job) through a scheduler. `Domain: Think of it like a workspace in which you can share securely your connectors and pipelines to specific users (colleagues, partners, clients...) We've designed this because as a data team member, we were writing a lot of long SQL queries with bad performances and we were getting headaches by debugging them. Now you can build, monitor and debug any kind of data pipelines with just Drag-and-drop built-in SQL functions to save you tremendous amount of time & effort. We're working on this continuously so we're keen to hear any feedback. Feature requests and critique are more than welcome. Try it out for free (30min of computing time offered each month): https://ift.tt/hYE7CMv The Getting Started docs are here for anyone who wants to check this out: https://ift.tt/3zNdpFL and https://ift.tt/1fBcDFM...

I think more people would consider learning programming if they understood it as a skill to add to the pursuit of their main interest. Young people see many careers as more prestigious, glamorous, or more exciting. For example, I think they could be encouraged by seeing that a research scientist who can program as having a skill that could make them more productive. They could for example automate the aspects of their job that are mundane and stretch their grant money further. I also see many entrepreneurs come up with companies that combine programming with their primary area of expertise. I even see doctors who write programs to help do their job. I just don't think its an angle that initiatives examine. A dual interest person can fall back onto their comp-sci skills they have if they cannot find work in their primary interest as well.

Ask HN: Do you think many posts don't get the front page attention they deserve?

We all know about the tyranny of user-upvoted content. Some good posts fall through the cracks and never get the attention they deserve. But I think HN is suffering from a slightly different problem. There are so many good posts that often extremely relevant and well received content never even hits my front page, and I am on this site a lot . I often use the "Search" feature to surface articles I am interested about, and many times I happen upon posts in the 100+ votes from the past day or two that somehow I didn't even see. I wonder if the really quick decaying algorithm paired with the amount of quality posts creates the unfortunate situation that reaching the front page or the intended audience is just a matter of pure luck. Have we reached a singularity point where Hacker News has become too popular and on average too interesting that content relevant to your interests rarely reaches you? EDIT: ironically, this post is now on the front page. If there's one thing I love about this site, is how it's slightly biased in favour of Ask HN and Show HN posts. Even in such a massive forum, everybody gets their 15 minutes in the spotlight.

f you like me and have created a website or an app that had some active users (I had 30 lol ) then you’ve probably realized that there is no good way to talk to them. Emails have a low response rate and can be just lost in spam. Feedback forms are hard to implement and are not very flexible. Creating communities in discord/slack takes time. So as a self-respected developer I decided to solve this problem. I thought why not bring smth like discord server directly to a website/app? Something that is very easy to integrate into your product which will automatically connect your entire user base. And this something will allow you to send instant messages/polls/feedback forms to users notifying them when they’re online using your product. And users can interact with these messages by voting/commenting or submitting forms. So I present you Taku: https://taku-app.com . What do you guys think? Does this problem exists and does my solution helps with that?

I wanted it to be 1. browser-based, so I could use my browser extensions 2. cross-platform, so I could read on different devices 3. able to read multiple books at the same time, so I don't have to open multiple windows Unfortunately, I didn't find it. As a developer, I really like the flexible layout and power of VS Code, so I tried to combine its design concept with EPUB reader, and Lota was born.

UHaul Data Breach

I just received this email a few days ago: We are writing to inform you of an incident that involved some of your information. We are providing this notice to explain the incident and measures we have taken, and also to provide some steps you can take in response. What Happened? We detected a compromise of two unique passwords that were used to access a customer contract search tool that allows access to rental contracts for U-Haul customers. The search tool cannot access payment card information; no credit card information was accessed or acquired. Upon identifying the compromised passwords, we promptly changed the passwords to prevent any further unauthorized access to the search tool and started an investigation. Cybersecurity experts were engaged to identify the contracts and data that were involved. The investigation determined an unauthorized person accessed the customer contract search tool and some customer contracts. None of our financial, payment processing or U-Haul email systems were involved; the access was limited to the customer contract search tool. What Information Was Involved? On August 1, 2022, our investigation determined some rental contracts were accessed between November 5, 2021, and April 5, 2022. After an in-depth analysis, our investigation determined on September 7, 2022, the accessed information includes your name and driver's license or state identification number Well its a nice email to wake up to. The first time I ever rent a uHaul and my DL is leaked.

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: Low-cost backup to S3 Glacier Deep Archive
Show HN: Low-cost backup to S3 Glacier Deep Archive
57 by mrich | 45 comments on Hacker News.
Hi, most people (hopefully) have local backups. However, when that backup fails, it is good to have a backup stored somewhere off-site. In the old days you would ship physical drives/tapes, which is cumbersome, costly, and slow. With fast upload speeds, it is now possible to upload your data to the cloud. I have found S3 Glacier Deep Archive to be a great solution for this: - It is very cheap ($1/TB/month for US region) - Very reliable (99.999999999% data durability, data spread over 3 Availability Zones) However, usability out of the box is not that great, I'm not aware of any automated backup solution for Deep Archive. This free project provides that. Currently, ZFS is required, but that might change. Please try it out and provide feedback!

Twitter blocked our indie game account for no reason
33 by jssnapiecek | 6 comments on Hacker News.
8 days ago, Twitter suspended the 'Ticket to Europe' account (https://twitter.com/TicketToEurope). As the reason, Twitter gave a vague formula: your account broke the Twitter Rules. What rules exactly? It is not known. We have already sent several appeals, but we are not getting any reply. Twitter Support also does not respond to us. We have the impression that for several days our efforts have only fallen into the abyss of algorithms. Several months of work on Twitter thus go to the trash. Is there any chance to get our Twitter account back? Is the only option to create a new account and start building a community from scratch? Do you have any experiences with similar situations? Personally, it is hard for us to imagine breaking any Twitter Rules. Our game is a socially engaged project that we have been working on for 8 years (https://ift.tt/tgnObpB). We invest private savings in it and create it out of a sense of mission - it's a Text-Based RPG about refugees. The scenario was based on real stories of refugees we met during our research in a refugee camp. We are supported by various human rights volunteers and various NGOs consulted the scenario. We do not promote racist behavior in any way, on the contrary - our project was created precisely to increase social awareness and sensitivity to the drama that refugees face. How can such ideals conflict with Twitter's principles? Dunno. Will publicizing such a case in the media increase our chances of recovering the account? Please help us, we are emotionally broken and a little desperate.

I got a offer from a company, which among other things, consists of a medium pay raise in comparison to my present job and more exciting projects. The company is mid sized and honored as one of the best employers although I would be working for a branch located in a lower cost of living country. In my current company I'm valued as a good employee and if it comes to cutting costs I highly doubt it I would be first or second in line. Considering the upcoming recession, is it wise to job hop for not such a huge pay rise or should I stick to my current, mildly boring but safe job instead?

Ask HN: Are authors of “how to be great developer” blogs great developers?

Every time I am reading blog posts about "how to become a great developer", or "what´s the difference between a good and a great developer", I am marvelling the self-confidence of the author. Or better to say: I am wondering if I should have better self-confidence too? During my 20 years of work experience as a developer, I´ve never felt that I am a great. Neither good. Maybe good enough, or good-ish. And it depends of many factors. First, I always know some guys, who are better than me. One is coding quicker, the other does not need so much googling or checking documentations during work, the next one has better code structure, and so on. I always had/have multiple leveled lists in my head, what I need to improve. To write tests. To change Js to Ts. To practice quicker typing. To create better snippets. To learn better focusing. I could continue the list... I don´t think I can tag myself as "great" until the list is done. Do these bloggers?
